author talks

My author talks are based on my books and the art of storytelling. I discuss where my ideas come from, the importance of dreaming and planning, and troubleshoot audience writing problems. I encourage students to contribute their views—everyone in the room has a story, and my author talks work best when they’re a conversation.

Duration: 60 minutes (45 minutes with 15 for questions)

Requirements: access to a screen and data projector for a PowerPoint presentation

Writing Workshops

My workshops are interactive, fun and practical. There is a focus on dreaming and craft—I guide participants through practical activities with clear instructions and, if needed, helpful scaffolding. Topics include generating ideas, creating and developing characters, collaborative writing, and the importance of using original details in writing.

I’ve been delivering writing workshops for over 20 years—am always happy to tailor workshops to suit student needs. Plot, structure, openings and endings, and dialogue are other workshop possibilities.

“Cath’s passion for writing is so infectious, and she is very personable and friendly, which made her a fantastic speaker for the event. …certainly some of the best feedback we’ve had on a speaker.” K. Wilmot, Youth Events Officer, City of Casey, November

“Cath was was warm and funny, and during the author talk she had about 90 year 7 and 8 students hanging off her every word. The writers workshop also went really well, and the students she worked with got so much out of it.
